Ceremonies for Life | Ruth A Henrich | Humanist Officiant

Funny how we get all introverted when asked to talk about oneself. I wonder how to best convey myself to you to help you make a choice about the Officiant you want to hire for your event. Here is a bit about me.

I am the mother of three and the wife of one. I am also the grandmother of 2 lovely energetic boys. I married the love of my life twice. Once back in 1976 and again in 2007. Yes, I married the same man twice and divorced him once. That’s a mistake I won’t make again. In my early youth I had a child who I gave up for adoption. My son and I reunited in 2008 and have become a part of each other’s lives. I have two gorgeous, independent daughters; one who is a film and movie director and the other an HVAC and refrigeration mechanic. My son holds a senior management position with a finance company. I am immensely proud of my children and their accomplishments. My husband Gord and I own and operate Haven on the Bay B&B in Red Bay and I am also the administrator for his two businesses, which operate in the trenchless technology industry.

I have lived in Red Bay (20 km north of Sauble Beach) since 2004 when we escaped the city (Toronto) for a simpler, less stressful lifestyle. It has ended up not so much simpler, but less stress and more quiet and more beauty, which make up for the not so simpler part we were striving for. Maybe in retirement.

I became a Humanist Officiant in 2010 when I realized there was a need in Grey and Bruce Counties for an alternative to religious life passage ceremonies. I am licensed by the Province of Ontario through the Registrar General’s office and affiliated with Humanist Canada. As a Humanist Officiant I offer non-religious ceremonies. I offer services that encompass a multitude of life passage moments; from baby namings to weddings to funerals.

The basic premise of Humanism is the belief in ourselves as intelligent human beings who can think and act for ourselves by ourselves using science and human innovation to inform us about the world using critical thinking and ensuring the equality of all people.

The ceremonies or life-event celebrations I perform are non-religious. Non-religious is not the same as non-denominational. Non-denominational implies there is a “god” or other supernatural being that is looked up to, be it from a Catholic, Muslim, Jewish or Protestant faith model. Non-religious is just that; no religion. Non-religious people may refer to themselves as anti-theist, agnostic or atheist.

I am compassionate, friendly and quick witted. I love to cook and don’t mind doing the laundry. I love to garden and I love to play, love to read books and go on the occasional adventure with my husband, my children or my family as a whole. I come from a large family (8 children) and spent my early years in Kitchener-Waterloo.

I hope that gives you an idea of the type of person I am and how I can serve your needs when it comes time for an event to mark a moment in your life.
